Already dominant in TDM1 with the second team of Spirou Charleroi, Marlon Makwa will compete in the Talento Game in Ninane on June 1st. Liège & Basketball goes for a chat with the gem from Charleroi.
(L’article en français est ici).
Marlon, you started basketball at a very young age.
Indeed, I started when I was 3 in Quaregnon. I then when to Courcelles when I was 5, transferred again when I was 7 and then join Mons-Hainaut when I was 10. I joined Charleroi last season.
In which category do you play?
I play both in national U21 and in TDM1.
Why have you decided to join the Spirou?
For my development, basically. I felt like the best opportunity for me to get better was there. I work out 4 times a week, and we do athletic and strength training, tactics and of course we do a lot of things on the court.
You also had the opportunity to represent Belgium…
I did, I played in the U16 European Championship last summer and I am selected with the U18 this year. Last year’s campaign is a very good memory. It was great to play against and to compete against other great talent.
Talking about basketball-related memories, which one is your best?
This years AWBB final, where we managed to beat Mons-Hainaut and when I received the MVP award.
What do you like the most in basketball?
It’s the show, the atmosphere.
What kind of player are you?
I’m a swingman, I can play either SG or SF. My strengths are the playmaking and the scoring.
“I want to be a pro”
Any players you are inspired by?
Yes, Luka Doncic and Pete Maravich.
What are your objectives going forward?
I want to be a pro, and maybe play in the Euroleague or joining the NBA, which is the ultimate dream.
You’ll soon be competing in the Talento Game in Ninane. What are your wishes for the game?
It’ll be the 3rd time I’ll play in this event. I approach it like a normal game, I want to have fun with friends who I am in national selection with. But I am looking to win, of course.
You’re followed by Talento. In which regards does this organization helps you?
Talento and Sébastien Cosentino give me a lot of advices for me to make the best choice, both in the short and the long term. They help me keeping a global vision not only in my basketball career, but also for my academic career and more globally for a “life project”.
